Song of the day: Supergrass – Sun hits the sky

Looking outside the window makes me wonder why exactly this season is called summer (for those living in other parts of the globe: temperature at least 10°C below what might be expected and rain all day instead of sunshine). I’ve heard claims that this might still be due to the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption in 2010 (as such hugely disruptive events can have an effect on the climate years after the fact).

Perhaps spreading a song with the word ‘sun’ in the title might improve the situation? I’ve decided to give it a try with this nice Supergrass song!

Song of the day: Tangerine Kitty – Dumb ways to die

There’s a controversial clip on Belgian TV these days to warn people not to run on or near train tracks. It shows a young guy being brutally run over by a train.

Quite a different approach is used in this Australian counterpart, whereby humour is used to deliver the same message. The song is titled Dumb ways to die and watch carefully: some of the ways they came up with are hilarious.

Song of the day: Donald Fagen – New Frontier

If you’ve never heard of Donald Fagen, you might still know Steely Dan, the band he is half of (together with Walter Becker). During most of the 1980’s and the early 90’s Fagen released some solo albums, some being the meaningful word there, as he is notorious for taking loads of time to complete an album (both the solo albums and the band’s albums).

The Nightfly, released in 1982, is my personal favourite – and in fact one of my favourite albums overall. Please take a few minutes to enjoy New Frontier, the song to I would like to present to you. And please try to listen to the entire album at some point in your life. I’m confident you won’t regret it.

Song of the day: Vampire Weekend – A-Punk

In spite of the band name and the title of the song, no vampires or punk are involved. Vampire Weekend is a New York based rock band that has been releasing some very nice songs since 2006.

They’re definitely on the list of bands that influence my choice of which summer festivals to attend (won’t happen this year, though, as they seem to have concerts in US and UK only scheduled so far).

Song of the day: Cream – I’m So Glad (live)

If you’re too young to ever have heard about Cream, a band that exitsted for only a couple of years in the late sixties, this blogpost is definitely meant for you. They never had the biggest hits, they were never the best performers, but they really had big impact on a lot that happened in popular music afterwards.

Here’s the opening track of one of their 2005 reunion concerts in London: I’m So Glad, which also happens to be me favorite Cream song, released in 1966 (as was yours truly). Please watch the video full screen – it’s HD.

I hope I have the same passion and pleasure when I get their age.

Song of the day: Bastian – You’ve got my love

Not only a memorable song this time, but also defintely a memorable video. Check it out if you want to discover what I mean. I can guarantee that you will watch it until the end. Having watched the clip several times (before publishing a post I make sure to undertake the necassary effort to research the material thoroughly – although effort might not be the most appropriate word here) I can hereby confirm you that the PageUp button is now my personal favourite. Do let me know, after having wtached the video, which image, word or phrase you prefer.

Bastian is an Amsterdam based band consisting of 7 longtime friends. You’ve got my love was released in 2001.

Song of the day: Eels – Peach Blossom

When the people close to me noticed that this blog is also featuring Song of the day posts, they have no doubt been wondering when the first Eels song would pop up here. Well, the time is now.

I picked Peach Blossom, a song from last year’s album Wonderful, Glorious. It’s a wonderful mix of rock and melody but also very catchy at the same time. A live performance of it last spring – during the concert in Brussels at the exact date of frontman Mark Oliver Everett’s (aka E) fiftieth birthday – was definitely one of my most memorable moments of 2013.

And as there is no such thing as too many Eels songs: keep listening to the stream below, as it contains a second track New Alphabet
