Song of the day: New Musik – This World of Water

If your choice of music is being called eclectic by those who like it, this most likely also implies that the initial response of the majority of the guys & girls out there is something along the lines of “never heard of any of those!” (that is: the response to the names of the artists and titles of the songs – once the songs are actually listened to, a bell goes ringing here and there, a for expample as a song is recognized as “the one from the jeans commercial”).

Another one perfectly fitting the line up here is This World of Water by New Musik, a British band that was releasing some wonderfully nice songs in the late seventies and early eighties.

Caveat: As on previous occasions with older songs, don’t expect any kind of video quality in the clip, as it goes back to the days of the release of the song. There’s water in it (deduction based on the song title) but you’re not really able to discriminate much more detail.

Song of the day: Soko – I’ll kill her

Remember MySpace? (In case you don’t remember it: don’t bother, it’s not ever coming back.) Once upon a time this was a platform used to launch musical careers – in a handful of cases with some success. The French actress and singer Soko (Stéphanie Sokolinski) is one of those cases as I’ll kill her, the hilariously funny story of her possible future being robbed by ‘that bitch blond girl’ – I especially feel sorry for Susan and Tom (who never had the opportunity so to speak to live up to their potential) – was first launched on her MySpace page.

Song of the day: Touch and Go – Would you…?

Although they have released a number of songs and the Wikipedia page on the band mentions “A new album should come out in 2014” (which is highly unlikely to be true as this blogpost is written in the closing days of 2014) this English band called Touch and Go definitely fits to my idea of a one hit wonder. But that obviously doesn’t mean it’s not a nice song to hear every now and then.

Don’t pay too much attention to the video clip, though. I guess it was made in an afternoon or so, simply using whatever was available in the house (which would explain the flatiron and the vacuum cleaner) and then messing around a bit with the color settings. The song was originally released in 1998.

Song of the day: The Flying Lizards – Money

The Flying Lizards is an English band you might never have heard of before, and there’s really not all that much to tell about them. Those amongst you that do know them, probably have a New Wave Classics compilation album lying around somewhere, featuring the song Money.

The history of the song is actually more interesting than the history of the band. Money was written by Tamla Motown founder Berry Gordy (together with Janie Bradford) at the time when he was foudning the record label and originally released in 1960 by Barrett Strong. It can therefore be considered to be the first hit record for Motown. The most famous cover was released in 1963 by a Liverpool-based band called… The Beatles (as the final song on their second album With The Beatles).

The song was covered quite a few times, and in 1979, this catchy cover version by The Flying Lizards brought the song again to the charts (as high as number 5 in some countries).

Song of the day: ELO – Mr. Blue Sky

Let me present you one of my favorite songs of the 70s: Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra.

I doubt those types of haircuts will ever be in style again (the clothes of course will, as all clothing styles eventually do), but a great song is timeless, so never mind what the performers look like at the moment of the original performance.

Song of the day: Buscemi / Bernthøler – My Suitor

A great cover of a great song: what more could one ask for? The case at hand is a song called My Suitor, a new wave classic originally released by Bernthøler in 1984 (it was love at first hear) and then covered in 2001 by the Belgian DJ Buscemi (aka Dirk Swartenbroekx) on his fabulous debut album Our Girl in Havana.

As the decision which of the two should be included here led to quite a bit of agony, I opted for the easy way out and present you both of them.

She’s clearly not an English native speaker – but the accent actually causes a strange mix of cuteness and melancholy.

Song of the day: Mark Ronson & The Business Intl – The Bike Song

It seems that songs about bicycles by default sound quite cheerful – possibly because the person writing the song is also compelled to use the sound of the bell that usually comes with the bike. Take for example Queen’s ‘I want to ride my bicycle’ or this ‘Bike Song’ by Mark Ronson.

Listen to the latter at your own risk: I can’t get it out of my head already for a few days now. Not that I mind. By the way: if you are too impatient to watch intros, the actual song starts at 0:45.

Song of the day: Puggy – Goes like this

Puggy is a Belgian band – at least that is what they call themselves, in spite of the fact that none of the members is actually Belgian (one’s British, one French and the third one Swedish). But they did meet in Belgium as they were all staying there at the time they met.

I don’t mind at all that they call themselves a Belgian band: anyone making such great songs – Goes like this demonstrates clearly that they do – can claim to be Belgian if I had anything to say about it.
